El Salvador’s Bukele reacts as $1B Bitcoin holdings bet increases on Kalshi
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele highlighted growing interest in prediction markets regarding the country's Bitcoin holdings potentially reaching $1 billion by late 2025. Bukele tweeted about Kalshi’s platform, where the likelihood of hitting this milestone increased significantly, moving from 20% to 38% in a short time. Rival platform Polymarket also entered the scene, offering similar betting odds at 43% for December 2025. Kalshi has tracked these betting trends since mid-August, which also saw fluctuations in percentages for bets prior to November and December 2025. Amid the growing optimism, no bets were created concerning past controversies about Bitcoin holdings, which arose when El Salvador’s central bank officials claimed to have halted purchases after discussions with the International Monetary Fund in 2024. Currently, El Salvador possesses approximately 6,282 Bitcoin, valued around $709 million, despite ongoing discussions about previous false communications. The developments occur alongside the dynamic nature of prediction markets, attracting significant investments and interest in cryptocurrency betting.
