El Salvador hasn’t bought Bitcoin since signing loan deal, IMF says
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported that El Salvador has not purchased any Bitcoin since agreeing to a loan deal in December 2024. This finding contradicts claims made by El Salvador's Bitcoin Office, which suggested the country was acquiring one Bitcoin daily. The IMF noted that El Salvador's public sector Bitcoin reserves have remained stable and that the Chivo wallet does not sell its Bitcoin, leading to appearances of accumulation. A letter of intent from El Salvador's central bank and finance minister confirmed the commitment to keep Bitcoin holdings unchanged while reducing the public sector's involvement in the Chivo wallet. Despite this, El Salvador's Bitcoin Office continued to assert daily BTC acquisitions, a stance that drew scrutiny after the IMF issued another notice in March 2025. President Nayib Bukele insisted that the country would uphold its Bitcoin purchase strategy, highlighting El Salvador's close relationship with Bitcoin and its controversial legal tender status.
