The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has recovered $40,300 in cryptocurrency related to a scam that impersonated officials from the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee. The fraud involved an email sent on December 24, 2024, that prompted a donor to transfer $250,300 worth of Tether (USDT) to the scammers' wallet. The email deceptively used a modified domain to appear legitimate. The FBI traced the stolen funds using blockchain analysis and initiated a civil forfeiture action to return the assets to the victim. Assistant Director Steven Jensen highlighted the prevalence of impersonation scams, emphasizing the need for public caution when verifying email senders. The DOJ acknowledged Tether for their cooperation in freezing and recovering the stolen cryptocurrency. This incident follows Trump's acceptance of cryptocurrency donations for fundraising efforts in 2024.
