The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is contemplating criminal charges against Dragonfly Capital Partners due to their investment in Tornado Cash, a controversial Ethereum-based mixer. During the trial of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thane Rehn indicated that Tom Schmidt and other Dragonfly partners could face charges linked to their involvement with the developers of Tornado Cash, specifically following their investment in Pepper Sec Inc. in 2020. Schmidt's home was raided and his devices seized as part of the investigation. Despite the DOJ's implications, co-founder Haseeb Qureshi defended Dragonfly's compliance with the law and expressed confidence that the charges would not materialize. The Tornado Cash platform, designed to anonymize cryptocurrency transactions, faces scrutiny as Storm is accused of operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business and violating U.S. sanctions. This case raises significant questions regarding the liability of developers for their platforms' usage.
