DOJ Is Considering Charging Crypto VC Firm Dragonfly in Connection With Tornado Cash
The U.S. Department of Justice is contemplating charges against Dragonfly Capital Partners and its partners over their investment in Tornado Cash developer Pepper Sec. During a criminal trial for Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, prosecutors indicated they might pursue charges against Dragonfly, whose general partner Tom Schmidt had previously invested in Pepper Sec. Dragonfly co-founder Haseeb Qureshi expressed confidence that they have cooperated fully with the investigation and deemed the potential charges absurd. Schmidt invoked the Fifth Amendment when called to testify, raising questions about whether he will ultimately be compelled to do so. The prosecution alleges Tornado Cash was used for illegal activities, while the crypto community argues against holding developers accountable for user actions. This case raises significant questions about legal liability for software developers in the cryptocurrency space, particularly regarding tools designed to preserve user privacy.
