DOJ Is Considering Charging Crypto VC Firm Dragonfly in Connection With Tornado Cash
The U.S. Department of Justice is contemplating criminal charges against Dragonfly Capital Partners and some of its executives over their investment in the developer behind Tornado Cash. This consideration emerged during the criminal trial of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Thane Rehn announcing the potential charges in federal court. Dragonfly had invested in Pepper Sec Inc., a company linked to Tornado Cash, in 2020. Dragonfly's co-founder Haseeb Qureshi expressed confidence in the firm's compliance with the law and stated they would vigorously defend themselves against any charges. Prosecutors revealed that they had seized devices belonging to Dragonfly's Tom Schmidt and raided his house as part of the investigation. The DOJ's scrutiny is fueled by allegations that Tornado Cash facilitated money laundering, raising significant questions about the legal responsibilities of software developers regarding user activities on their platforms. Storm faces grave charges, potentially leading to a maximum of 45 years in prison.
