Czech Government Survives No-Confidence Vote Amid Bitcoin Scandal
The Czech Republic's Civic Democratic Party survived a fourth no-confidence vote sparked by concerns over a $45 million Bitcoin donation linked to Tomáš Jiřikovský, a convicted criminal. The donation, made on May 27 to the Ministry of Justice, raised alarms among opposition parties including ANO, SPD, and the Pirates, who needed 101 votes to succeed but only garnered 94. Prime Minister Petr Fiala acknowledged that the incident has damaged public confidence, admitting mistakes in handling the situation. The newly appointed Justice Minister, Eva Decroix, has promised to launch an independent investigation into the donation, which stems from Jiřikovský gaining control of Bitcoin from previously seized assets. This scandal adds to a series of governmental controversies regarding cryptocurrency involvement, including pressure on Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura to resign, amid claims that he was aware of the donation.
