Czech Government Survives No-Confidence Vote Amid Bitcoin Scandal
The Czech Republic's Civic Democratic Party has narrowly survived a fourth no-confidence vote, triggered by opposition concerns regarding a $45 million Bitcoin donation linked to Tomáš Jiřikovský, a convicted criminal. The scandal emerged following a donation made to the Ministry of Justice on May 27. The motion, presented by opposition parties ANO, SPD, and the Pirates, received 94 votes, seven short of the necessary majority. The debate lasted over 24 hours in Parliament and highlighted ongoing tensions regarding governmental involvement in cryptocurrency. Prime Minister Petr Fiala admitted mistakes but accused the opposition of leveraging the scandal for political gain. Following the controversy, the former Justice Minister resigned, and the newly appointed minister, Eva Decroix, has committed to an independent investigation into the donation. Jiřikovský had previously controlled a substantial amount of Bitcoin tied to illegal activities, further complicating the situation for the government.
