Nicholas Truglia, a crypto scammer convicted of SIM-swapping attacks in 2022, had his prison sentence increased from 18 months to 12 years due to his failure to repay over $20 million in restitution to his victim, a crypto investor named Michael Terpin. Truglia had previously demonstrated a willingness to repay, but the judge, Alvin Hellerstein, noted that he had consistently evaded law enforcement and judicial efforts to enforce the repayment order. Despite having assets exceeding $61 million, Truglia made no restitution payments after his initial sentencing. The resentencing highlights the serious consequences of the financial crimes associated with SIM-swapping, where scammers hijack a victim's phone number to access sensitive accounts and steal funds. Terpin lost $24 million as a result of Truglia's actions and had also filed a civil lawsuit against him, which adds another layer to this case of cryptocurrency fraud.
