Cameron Albert Redman, a 22-year-old Canadian cybercriminal, was sentenced to one year in prison for stealing nearly $800,000 by hacking X accounts of digital artists. In 2022, Redman and his accomplices targeted over 200 victims, tricking them into clicking links that led to fraudulent websites mimicking those of reputable creators and brands. By hijacking these accounts, they launched false raffle promotions, convincing users to authorize transactions that resulted in unauthorized access to their crypto wallets. This manipulation led victims to inadvertently give up control of their NFTs and digital currencies. Redman's criminal history includes a previous jail sentence for a SIM-swapping attack that stole over $40 million in cryptocurrency. U.S. authorities emphasized the ongoing threat of such scams, stating that in recent times, hackers have already caused losses exceeding $1.7 billion in the crypto sector for 2025, highlighting the need for increased security measures among crypto users.
