Crypto Exchange Kraken Secures MiCA License in Ireland
Crypto exchange Kraken has announced it has secured a license under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework from the Central Bank of Ireland. This license allows Kraken to expand its services across all 30 European Economic Area member states, following the implementation of MiCA regulations which came into effect in 2024. The exchange previously obtained a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) license in February and an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license in 2023. Other exchanges, including Coinbase and Crypto.com, have also received MiCA licenses this year. MiCA aims to establish regulatory consistency for digital assets across the EU. However, not all companies are in favor of these regulations, with some, like stablecoin issuer Tether, expressing concerns over compliance. Kraken's announcement follows its recent relocation to Wyoming, emphasizing its commitment to working within pro-crypto regulatory frameworks in the U.S., amidst ongoing regulatory scrutiny from U.S. authorities, including the SEC.
