Crypto Billionaire Bit Off Attacker’s Finger in Attempted Kidnapping
Billionaire crypto investor Tim Heath recounted a violent attempted kidnapping that occurred last year, where he bit off part of his assailant's finger during the attack. The ambush, planned for weeks using GPS trackers, fake passports, and burner phones, involved attackers disguising themselves as painters. They attempted to kidnap Heath as he ascended the stairs to his apartment, but he managed to break free after the bite. The severed finger was found at the scene and matched DNA evidence. Following the incident, Heath invested €2.7 million in personal security and is seeking over €3.2 million in damages. This attack reflects a troubling rise in 'wrench attacks' against crypto holders, which exploit attackers targeting individuals directly rather than hacking their digital assets. Reports have surfaced about other high-profile incidents, including a notable kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland. Experts warn that current regulations, which could link identities to crypto wallet addresses, may expose individuals to increased physical attacks, underscoring the need for improved privacy and security measures in the crypto space.
