Optimum's new propagation layer, mumP2P, aims to transform Ethereum's validator economics by enhancing performance and increasing staking yields. Early tests by Everstake have shown a 5–6x speedup in block propagation times, currently averaging around 150 milliseconds. This improvement is crucial as it helps reduce the risk of missed blocks, leading to more rewards for users. Moreover, the implementation of mumP2P may enable future protocol upgrades, such as shorter slot times, which developers like Muriel Médard and Tomasz K. Stańczak are exploring. They suggest that shorter slot times could potentially be achieved without compromising on the network's fork choice rules. The shift to mumP2P is expected to benefit larger validators significantly, but solo operators also stand to gain by minimizing missed attestations. If tests are successful, the technology could be deployed to the mainnet within three months, marking a pivotal step forward for Ethereum.
