Coinbase seeks public records from Oregon gov’t on crypto ‘flip-flop’
Coinbase has filed a lawsuit against Oregon state officials for injunctive relief regarding claims that state officials reversed their stance on digital assets without transparency. The lawsuit, filed in Marion County Circuit Court, targets Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and contends that the state violated public record laws by not responding to requests for documents about digital asset enforcement actions, particularly concerning claims that more than 30 tokens offered by Coinbase were unregistered securities. Prior to April 2025, state officials reportedly did not view digital assets as securities but changed their position thereafter. Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, criticized the government's refusal to release public records and asserted that the company is prepared to take legal action to rectify this issue. This controversy occurs amid ongoing debates about cryptocurrency regulations and aligns with Coinbase's larger strategy of filing Freedom of Information Act requests over various crypto policies. Furthermore, the company is pushing for upcoming legislation concerning central bank digital currencies and payment stablecoins, which could significantly impact its operations in the U.S.
