Change in US crypto laws may affect charges in Do Kwon’s criminal case
Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon, facing criminal charges in the US, may see changes in his indictment due to new legislation moving through Congress, specifically the GENIUS Act. The Act aims to regulate payment stablecoins and could impact Kwon's charges related to the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin and LUNA token. The UST's failure in 2022 triggered the crash of the Terra ecosystem, leading to criminal charges against Kwon and others. Kwon, who was arrested in Montenegro in 2023, faces nine felony counts including securities fraud and money laundering, and has pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled to begin in January 2026. The GENIUS Act is currently under consideration in the House of Representatives after passing the Senate. It shares the stage with another bill, the STABLE Act, both of which could influence how regulatory authorities like the SEC treat cases involving digital assets.
