Users and supporters of the crypto platform TradeOgre have criticized the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for its seizure of the website and $40.6 million in cryptocurrency, arguing that the agency unjustly took funds from innocent users due to the actions of a few. The RCMP claims this is the largest cryptocurrency seizure in Canadian history, alleging TradeOgre was involved in criminal money laundering and failed to register as a money service business. Critics, including MetaMask security lead Taylor Monahan, expressed that many users are not criminals and denounced the seizure as theft. Reuben Yap, a co-founder of privacy-focused crypto Firo, emphasized that the actions of the RCMP seem to penalize users for not undergoing Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, questioning the legality of forgoing returns to legitimate users. The arduous process for users to reclaim their funds is expected to be filled with complexity and potential pitfalls, drawing comparisons to previous government seizures in the U.S.
