A Brazilian crypto trader's mother was kidnapped as criminals sought a ransom in Bitcoin, reportedly around $600,000. After monitoring the son’s social media activities, the gang tracked the retired teacher and abducted her in Recife, demanding Bitcoin after holding her hostage for 12 hours. The son, located in Portugal, complied with their demands and transferred 5 BTC. Brazilian police have arrested four suspects in connection with the case. This incident is part of a disturbing trend known as “wrench attacks,” where kidnappers target individuals for their crypto assets. Similar cases have been reported globally, including a kidnapping in London involving a Belgian barber and a series of attacks in France targeting prominent crypto figures. Crypto-related kidnappings are on the rise, reflecting the growing risks associated with digital currencies.
