Bitcoiner Loses $91M In Social Engineering Attack
A Bitcoiner lost $91 million in a social engineering attack where impostors posed as hardware wallet support. The hacker managed to deceive the victim into transferring 783 BTC, with the transaction occurring on a Tuesday morning, as reported by blockchain investigator ZachXBT. The stolen funds were laundered using Wasabi Wallet, which conceals transaction trails. Social engineering attacks, where attackers trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, are becoming increasingly common, affecting a wide range of individuals from seasoned investors to the elderly. ZachXBT advises individuals to treat every call or email with skepticism to avoid falling victim to such scams. This incident occurred exactly one year after a similar attack, and while ZachXBT did not disclose any specific suspects, he eliminated the notorious North Korean Lazarus Group as a suspect.
