Bitcoin treasury firm Metaplanet graduates to FTSE Japan and All-World indices
Metaplanet, a Bitcoin treasury company, has been upgraded to a mid-cap stock in FTSE Russell’s September 2025 Semi-Annual Review and included in the FTSE Japan Index. This inclusion is expected to attract passive capital into the Bitcoin market, potentially stabilizing BTC prices. The company reported a staggering 187% year-to-date gain compared to Japan's TOPIX 30 index, which only appreciated 7.2% YTD. Currently, Metaplanet holds 18,888 BTC, making it the seventh-largest publicly traded holder of Bitcoin. Originally a hotel operator, the company transitioned to Bitcoin treasury management in 2024. Its leadership aims to accumulate 210,000 BTC, which represents 1% of Bitcoin's total supply, by 2027. Additionally, CEO Simon Gerovich mentioned potential expansions into digital banking and other businesses related to digital assets using a portion of their Bitcoin holdings.
