Australia’s Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) has initiated an inquiry into the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) following concerns regarding its governance and technical capabilities, particularly after the cancellation of a blockchain project intended to upgrade its CHESS settlement engine. Led by Rob Whitfield, a former risk officer at Westpac and current Commonwealth Bank director, the expert panel also includes Christine Holman and Guy Debelle, both experienced figures in finance. This investigation, launched on June 16, addresses ongoing worries about ASX's ability to maintain stable and secure market infrastructure. The scope of the inquiry will encompass the entire ASX group, assessing aspects such as risk controls and governance. The scrutiny was intensified by ASX’s previous misleading statements regarding its blockchain upgrade, which led to significant financial and political repercussions.
