Albania has appointed its AI-powered virtual assistant, Diella, as one of the world’s first AI ministers, tasked with overseeing government procurement and ensuring corruption-free operations. Prime Minister Edi Rama announced this innovation, stating Diella's role is crucial for improving transparency in a sector plagued by historical scandals. Previously, Diella operated on the e-Albania platform, assisting citizens with administrative tasks and issuing over 36,600 digital documents. However, Rama did not clarify accountability for possible errors by Diella or suggest how to manage AI vulnerabilities. The introduction of AI in politics follows a trend seen in Ukraine with an AI spokesperson. Albania’s struggles with corruption have hindered its EU membership aspirations since 2014. Rama is hopeful that these reforms may lead to membership by 2030.
