$3.5 Billion Bitcoin Heist, Biggest Crypto Hack Ever, Retroactively Uncovered
A $3.5 billion Bitcoin heist, identified as the largest in cryptocurrency history, has been retroactively uncovered by Arkham Intelligence. The hack, which involved the theft of 127,426 BTC from Chinese mining pool LuBian on December 28, 2020, went unreported at the time. Arkham's investigation revealed that nearly 90% of LuBian's Bitcoin was taken before the platform managed to transfer its remaining BTC to recovery wallets. The stolen Bitcoin, now valued at approximately $14.5 billion, was facilitated by a vulnerability in LuBian's private key generation algorithm, which was susceptible to brute-force attacks. The platform utilized an OP_RETURN message in 1,516 transactions embedding the hacker's wallet addresses, costing it around 1.4 BTC.
